Substance abuse

Depression    Anxiety    ADHD    Bipolar    Substance Abuse    Gambling Addiction   Sexual Addiction
New Leaf provides treatment to people who have various addictions.  Addictions to drugs and alcohol are the most common but there are also addictions to gambling, pornography, sex, shopping, and exercise to name a few.  Addiction, by definition, is the continued use of a substance despite the adverse consequences.  People don't realize how easy it is to become addicted to something.  Its hard for them to see themselves establishing an addiction until its too late.  Addiction, substance abuse, and chemical dependency all have the same correlation... They are all destructive and also deeply impact those around you.  We can help you.

The addiction cycle

Picture
Any and all addictions start out slow, through occasional use. However, as the effect the user receives grows, so does the need for it. It then turns into a cycle like the diagram illustrates.

Fantasy occurs when the user can't stop thinking about it.  Also how the user gets the substance and decides to use it.  The ritual is what the person goes through when he/she engages in the substance and any obstacles they will go through to hide their use from others.  The acting out occurs after the user is found to have been using and is confronted about it.  The amount of shame differs from each user, sometimes its a strong shame and sometimes its a non issue.

Eventually, the user returns to fantasy and starts the cycle all over again. This is the same cycle that repeats itself in hurting those who love you.

Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependence

These are the technical clinical terms to describe and addiction or dependence to alcohol or drugs.  A person can be addicted to both drugs and alcohol at the same time, more even. Prescription pill abuse is on the rise in America and can lead to dangerous repercussions.  The good news for you is that you have decided to finally get help and New Leaf can provide that for you.

The sooner you start treatment, the more likely you are to succeed.  The ultimate goal of treatment is for you to reach and maintain sobriety.  While sober, you will continue to get cravings and be tempted to use again. However, through good treatment, you will develop an ability to resist and refrain from using again.

Compulsive Gambling

For most people, gambling is something they do when they are on vacation in Vegas or an occasional office pool regarding the Super Bowl or other sporting event.  For some however, gambling is a serious problem that has them on the brink of financial ruin if not already ruined.

New Leaf can help you regain your financial responsibility and help control the impulsion to gamble.   Impulse control is a strong component of treatment.  Through this method, you can learn to begin to control your impulsion to gamble.  Stop chasing the win and chase a new life, without gambling.

Sexual Addiction

Sexual addiction is commonly a loose term associated with celebrities or other persons that have been caught in a sex scandal. However, it is a real addiction that can be a destructive force n your life.

Like an addiction to gambling, sexual addiction can be very impulsive.  Most people think that sex addiction is having sex with many people, however, that is only a small factor.  A sex addict doesn't have sex due to simple lust and inhibition, it's to satisfy an urge, an impulse. Most often times, the sexual partner is someone they wouldn't normally be attracted to.  Problems with pornography, cabarets, obsessive fantasy, and other sexual behaviors.

The Serenity Prayer

Picture

God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

Courage to change the things I can,

And Wisdom
to know the difference.

Stop and reflect what this prayer means, what it stands for, and how it can help save your life. The first line is in reference to people in denial. The second line refers to hope, and the third is for knowledge...
